Breast Cancer Survivor Thankful for Early Detection, Exceptional Care

1 min read  |  January 24, 2018  |

An abnormal mammogram in 2011 convinced Laura Gallo to get regular mammograms. When they found breast cancer in 2017, they found it at an early stage and she was able to be treated without chemotherapy.

“I told her what I thought I might do if I were in her position, what I thought she needed to treat her cancer,” said Dr. Susan Kesmodel, director of Breast Surgical Oncology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System. “I think the outlook is really good for her.”

Last year, Laura joined Dr. Kesmodel at the annual Miami Dolphin’s Cancer Challenge, which funds cancer research and patient treatments at Sylvester.

“I got to stand side-by-side with Dr. Kesmodel and basically stand out there as a survivor of cancer,” said Laura. “It was really inspirational.”
