Between his active lifestyle and working on the computer, Alex Olesen grew tired of glasses and contacts.

“I rowed in college, and I play a lot of golf. I always switched between glasses for work… then contacts whenever I was exercising,” says Alex.

He went to see Rahul S. Tonk, M.D., Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, who specializes in vision correction surgery.

Bascom Palmer eye surgeon performs customized LASIK procedure

“We now are doing highly customized individualized laser treatments. So, it is not the same LASIK as had been done in the past. We are reaching levels of 20/20 or better that have never been seen before. And that has to do with using specialty lasers and then also using special devices that identify all of the unique features of someone’s eye,” Dr. Tonk says.

Inside the Laser Suite at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute the most advanced laser surgery is performed, one of many options allowing doctors to customize treatment for patients who want to be free of their glasses and contacts.

“You wake up the next morning, you go to reach for your glasses, you don’t need them, but you will look around the room and everything is sharper than it’s ever been,” Alex says.

“There are so many different ways to correct one’s vision in 2024. You have laser vision correction. You have implantable lenses like the EVO. And then you have lens exchange surgery, changing out their natural lens with an advanced technology lens implant,” Dr. Tonk explains.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has been ranked the number one eye hospital in the country for the 22nd year in a row.

“Part of that has to do with our exquisite care for our patients and caring about the quality and the safety, part of it has to do with our research and driving forward the latest and greatest in technology, always to make sure that what we’re delivering is cutting edge,” says Dr. Tonk.

“Bascom Palmer gets consistently very high reviews and has a wonderful staff of surgeons; I think that made it a no-brainer to come here,” Alex says.

He says Dr. Tonk and the Bascom Palmer team opened his eyes to a new way of life!
“I think it definitely helped my self-confidence. It is incredible!” says Alex.
